Fire, light and warmth at any time and in any place - this is what the white Esbit fuel tablet stands for, which every outdoor enthusiast knows. The energy dispensers are available as four, eight, ten, twelve and fourteen gram tablets. Campers as well as mountain sports enthusiasts and hikers use them to heat up their meals. Unlike spirit, gas or other fuels, Esbit can be transported and used safely. Esbit owes a significant 85 percent of its sales to armed forces and aid organizations at home and abroad. The dry fuel is an integral part of the ration packs for soldiers in numerous armies in Europe and overseas. In the event of natural disasters such as earthquakes or floods, the little helper is distributed by many aid organizations together with food rations. To ensure that Esbit can also be used in adverse conditions, the company has developed simple, foldable metal cooking stoves that also serve as transport containers.
Esbit's success story began with an incident on a skiing vacation in 1932, which gave the then 25-year-old Erich Schumm from Stuttgart the idea for his business: a friend accidentally swallowed one of the then commercially available fuel tablets because he mistook it for a sweet and suffered light poisoning. The Swabian hobbyist was preoccupied with the idea of a non-toxic fuel that could be used anywhere. He experimented with various substances until the recipe for "Erich Schumm's fuel in tablet form" (Esbit) was found. Esbit has been known all over the world since 1949, when Erich Schumm and Adolf Langeloh joined forces to form Esbit Compagnie GmbH in order to distribute their products jointly from Hamburg.
In 1999, Adolf Langeloh's shareholding was dissolved, meaning that Esbit Compagnie GmbH is now wholly owned by the Paap family. It is now run as a family business by the third generation: in 2003, Dieter Paap handed over the management of the company to his son Philip.
Today, Esbit offers an extensive range of innovative and high-quality cooking systems, cookware, titanium items, stainless steel insulated flasks and containers in addition to its traditional products.
