F1 - the short version of the Pilot Survival Knife. The knife and the philosophy behind it is the basis of the company, which was founded in 1984. Just one year after its founding, the company presented its first color catalog with exclusive knives from Europe, Japan and the USA. In 1987, a request came from the Swedish military. They needed a better survival knife for the pilots of the Air Force and their search on the previous market had been unsuccessful. Too small, too big, too dangerous; none met the requirements. The company owner, Peter Hjortberger, began to tinker. At the time, army knives were either very simple or belonged to the WWII tradition (bayonets in various designs). Peter searched through catalogs and magazines with new ideas from America. The knife should be made of stainless steel and extremely strong steel. The shaft should be safe and ergonomic in the hand. It should offer safety in every situation, even in cold and wet conditions. Pilots are exposed to great forces during an emergency exit from the aircraft. The knife should be light so that the suit is not damaged in the process. It should also be designed for extreme use. Peter made an initial sketch. The result was a modern hunting knife with a fairly thick, tapered blade made of special high-end steel (ATS34, Hitachi Metals, Japan) and a well-shaped shaft made of Thermorum plastic.
The only problem: Peter hadn't thought about the price of the knife. But none of the other suppliers were able to convince the Air Force. So Fällkniven was able to deliver the first knives in August 1995. A year later, the knives were sold on the civilian market. Sales went well, at that time there were almost only folding knives on the market. So Peter was a pioneer with his mass-produced high-end knife made of fine steel. Many competitors tried to copy the knife, but none came close to the original. Fällkniven is still the market leader for survival and hunting knives. The knife went so well that sales of other brands were discontinued and Fällkniven concentrated entirely on its own products: Fällkniven quality knives. Today, the selection of Fällkniven knives is very large and the knives are sold worldwide. However, they all share the basic idea of the F1. They should be of high quality, made of strong steel and safe and comfortable to handle. And Peter still doesn't look at the costs when designing... The future is also taken care of: the SAAB GROUP guarantees approval for many years to come. A modern, minimalist hunting knife from the Arctic Circle in the far north of Sweden is still the best-selling hunting and survival knife in the world.
