Fivefingers is a type of shoe designed by the manufacturer Vibram for outdoor sports. The Italian company made a name for itself with the hard-wearing soles of its barefoot shoes, which are ideal for hiking, running, mountain sports and water sports.
Vibram uses a special manufacturing process for Fivefingers barefoot shoes that results in soles that are as ultra-lightweight as they are robust. This allows the barefoot shoes to be used even in adverse weather conditions. Many recreational athletes also wear them for indoor fitness training and for all indoor team sports. The Vibram Fivefingers give the feet a very good grip. They remain extremely comfortable. Other brands even use the Vibram Fivefingers soles for their own shoe models.
The running feeling with Vibram Fivefingers is that of running barefoot over any underground without the soles hurting or even being injured. Fivefingers therefore support the health of muscles, tendons and joints. For a long time, orthopaedists have been pointing out that walking barefoot is the best way to get around. However, in the mountains or on tarmac, even on an unknown meadow, this can entail dangers that barefoot shoes eliminate. They can be worn like any other shoe in the office, when shopping, for all leisure activities and at celebrations. Technically, however, they differ from classic footwear, which is why they are known as minimal shoes. The manufacturer Vibram has been working on this development for a long time. The history of the company from Albizzate (province of Varese) began in 1935, the year in which six mountain sportsmen died on Punta Rasica at an altitude of 3,305 metres due to unsuitable shoes. Company founder Vitale Bramani was a mountain sportsman himself and immediately began researching shoes with rubber soles for alpine terrain. His brand name Vibram was made up of his first name and surname (Vitale Bramani). The company later expanded its range to include barefoot shoes for all kinds of activities.
