About Hanwag

Since 1921, HANWAG - named after company founder Hans Wagner - has been producing mountain and trekking shoes of the highest quality at its headquarters in Vierkirchen, near Munich. Hans Wagner was one of the three sons of master shoemaker Johann Wagner. Together with his brothers Adolf (later: Hochland) and Lorenz Wagner (later: Lowa), he learned the shoemaking trade from his father.

He learned how to make double-stitched shoes, which were not very well known at the time, from a master shoemaker in Munich. At the time, this was still a relatively new upper-bottom connection technique for robust footwear. In 1921, Hans Wagner initially made custom-made shoes in Vierkirchen. He then began to make double-stitched shoes (Haferl shoes) at home.

In the mid-1920s, the first leather ski boots were made in addition to Haferl and mountaineering boots. In 1940, it was possible to switch to machine sewing. Shoe production and sales increased due to increased demand and the activity of improved materials. In 1970, the company began developing the first functional alpine touring ski boot. HANWAG also produced and continues to produce climbing shoes and special shoes for hang gliding and paragliding. In 1992, HANWAG launched the FUTURA concept, an innovation on the boot market. The integrated shaft tongue system prevents the tongue from slipping. The reduced pressure on the tibia and fibula enables a comfortable fit and increases wearer comfort.

To this day, HANWAG continues to fulfill its pioneering role in alpine footwear by producing high-quality shoes for outdoor enthusiasts of all types. Traditional craftsmanship combined with sophisticated technical know-how and continuous innovation as well as genuine passion form the foundation of the extensive collection. To put it in a nutshell: The best fit, robustness, durability and the use of the best materials are still the features clothing of HANWAG shoes today. The HANWAG fit is almost legendary. The reasons are obvious: over nine decades of experience, high craftsmanship, selected materials and elaborate manufacturing processes. All with the aim of achieving high functionality and top quality. What's more, everything is "Made in Europe", and some of the models are even "Made in Germany". This guarantees quality. From 1972 to 2004, Josef Wagner, Hans Wagner's nephew, was responsible for the company's fortunes. Since September 1, 2004, HANWAG has been part of the listed Fenix Outdoor Group, alongside the companies Fjällräven, Primus, Tierra and Brunton.
