The story of LifeStraw began in 1994 with a request to the Vestergaard company for the construction of a filter that would filter Guinea worm larvae from water. More than 37 million units of the filter solution developed at that time have been sold to date and infections with the dangerous parasites have become very rare. This was the first time that something like this had been achieved without vaccines. Spurred on by this success, Vestergaard set about developing a new water filter that could filter out virtually all microbiological contaminants from non-potable water. The resulting LifeStraw technology was launched in 2005. The filter was originally intended for people in developing countries who are not connected to a water supply and have no access to clean water. The LifeStraws were also intended to serve as an emergency device to filter contaminated water after natural disasters.
In 2008, LifeStraw technology was launched for use in private households. To purify larger quantities of water, the LifeStraw family of water purifiers was added. Thanks to their durability and ease of use, the water filters are also interesting for the travel and outdoor market. LifeStraw has been serving this segment since 2011 and today the LifeStraw portfolio includes various filters for different amounts of water, from refillable water bottles, a water bag for expeditions and camping to filters for institutions, hospitals or schools. LifeStraw is used in water products and projects in over 64 countries around the world. The company's innovative technology has already won several awards, including Time magazine's "Best Invention of 2005" award.
