Opinel knives, which were originally developed as winegrowers' knives, have been handmade with high precision in the small mountain village of Savoy in France since 1890. The French company has been family-owned from the very beginning and remains so to this day.
Since 1973, the company headquarters and the second of the two production sites have been located in Chambéry, also in the Rhone-Alpes region of Savoie. Up to 90 employees at both sites ensure that the famous French icon can be found not only in its home country, but now all over the world. The design of the simply constructed Opinel, which has now been sold essentially unchanged for over a century, is considered classic. Although the manufacturing process has changed considerably from 1920 to the present day, great importance is still attached to traditional craftsmanship. The symbol of the main couronnée ('the crowned hand') was already stamped on the first Opinel knives and has been a distinguishing feature since 1890. The words OPINEL and FRANCE were added later.
Today, Denis Opinel, the great-grandson of the founder Joseph Opinel, continues the family business. The knives are very robust and versatile. Whether among scouts, anglers or hunters, Opinel lovers can be found everywhere. The unique Virobloc system allows the blade to be locked in both the closed and open position, making it safe to work with. The high-quality wooden handles are made of long length hardwood and are very cleanly finished. The stainless steel blade is being appreciated by more and more knife lovers, as it is much easier to care for than carbon steel and is still very sharp. OPINEL kitchen knives are perfect for cutting fruit, vegetables, meat, sausage or bread. All blades are of course made of stainless steel and are very light to sharpen!
