The German company, based near Munich, is a mountain sports specialist with a focus on four segments: Clothing, avalanche transceivers, emergency equipment and backpacks.

ORTOVOX looks back on a rich history, beginning with the founding of the engineering office Gerald Kampel for metrological equipment and industrial automation. In 1976, precise measuring devices were initially developed for subway railroad construction, which contributed significantly to greater safety in subway railroad construction.

Just 4 years later, Kampel develops the first ORTOVOX F2 dual-frequency device for searching for avalanche victims in collaboration with Jürgen Wegner. At this time, avalanche transceivers were in activity, transmitting and receiving on different frequencies (2.275 kHz and 457 kHz). This led to fatal accidents during avalanches, as the victims could not be rescued immediately due to the different frequencies. The F2 was able to transmit and receive on both frequencies, was enthusiastically received and achieved market position No. 1 after just two years.

Numerous innovative mountain sports products followed in the decades that followed. The ORTOVOX deep snow backpack and the ORTOVOX avalanche shovel from 1985 are still in activity after more than 20 years, which stands for the high quality standard of ORTOVOX products. With the legendary and continuously developed avalanche transceivers from Ortovox, the company is constantly achieving further milestones in the field of safety products. Developed in 1999, the ORTOVOX m2 was the avalanche transceiver with the fastest timing at the time, the simplest and fastest system for switching from transmitting to receiving, a uniquely innovative harness system and the ability to reliably locate multiple buried victims. The m2 was declared the winner in s more often than any other ORTOVOX avalanche transceiver before it.

The company also plays a pioneering role in the clothing sector and is regarded as a pioneer. ORTOVOX is the only company to offer the natural functional fiber wool in a complete layering system from the first to the third layer. For the Merino Competition line introduced in 2009, the company receives the European Skiing Award for clothing and the Out Door Industry Award 09 at ISPO 09. Today, wool types such as Swiss wool (SWISSWOOL) or super fine Merino wool from the natural paradise of Tasmania are used and combined with various other innovative materials. This has resulted in 25 years of wearing comfort that has been optimized in terms of functionality and comfort in every layer.
