The adventure began in Japan in 1921 with the founding of Shimano Iron Works by the talented mechanic Shozaburo Shimano. The young Shimano had the dream of building his own freewheel hub. Shimano set itself apart from its competitors with its uncompromising quality standards. Since 1970, the manufacture of fishing reels has been part of Shimano's extensive product range. This was later followed by rod production and a range of accessories; in 1991, to mark the company's seventieth anniversary, it changed its name to Shimano Incorporated.
