About Trek'n'Eat

Trek'n Eat produces specialty foods that are prepared as ready meals with water for travel, expeditions, boats and excursions into nature. Vegan and exotic, sometimes hearty and sometimes high-tech, Trek'n Eat's dishes really pack a punch. In 1980, Folker Schultheiss from Mörfelden (Hesse, Germany) came up with the idea of offering freeze-dried food for travel. Initially the food was imported from the USA, but in 1987 he started his own production. Trekking-Mahlzeiten GmbH supplied alpinists and adventurers, including Arved Fuchs and Reinhold Messner. Over the years, the meals have become more and more sophisticated and have become increasingly popular on normal outdoor tours. In 2004, the company was taken over by the Swiss company Katadyn Produkte AG.

During production, the ingredients are shock-frozen and dried in a vacuum with the addition of heat. Why? Freeze-drying removes moisture from food through sublimation, which turns water molecules into damper. In this way, it is preserved and almost all of the valuable ingredients such as vitamins, essential oils or minerals are retained in the outdoor food. Even though this process preserves most of the natural flavors, this product does not do without flavor enhancers. Please note that the natural-sounding yeast extract contains glutamate. Caution is advised for allergens, as possible incompatible ingredients such as lactose, gluten, lactose, sodium glutamate and milk protein may be hidden in the freeze-dried food.

As freeze-dried food contains no water and is therefore nice and light, it is ideal for taking with you when hiking or keeping in an emergency kit. All you need to do is add boiling water and a tasty meal is ready in just a few minutes. Trek'n Eat not only saves weight, but also waste bags. Empty packaging can be sealed tightly and used as a container for other waste on the tour.
