Where can I find beautiful, unknown pitches for wild camping in a van? Can I stay overnight in a public car park? Is sleeping in a vehicle even legal? Our tips will have you well prepared for camping on four wheels.

Travelling in a van means freedom: you have everything with you and can stop wherever you like. Whether you can stay there overnight depends on various rules. Here are some tips on finding a nice pitch. We’ve also compiled the most important safety rules for a relaxed camper van trip.

If you don’t have your own camper van but would like to travel in one, MyCamper is a sharing platform for motor homes and camper vans. You can easily rent a camper van there, and with the TransaCard you’ll benefit from an attractive discount.

Finding a pitch: useful apps and tips

When searching for pitches, it’s worth looking for suitable locations in advance using apps and online platforms. It also helps to be flexible with your plans, stay spontaneous and have alternative options ready.

Safety tips for travelling in a camper van

There are a few safety tips to consider when pitching away from campsites. You’re generally safer against theft or property damage in well-lit areas. Here are some more tips for making your camper van trip safer:

  • Always park backwards so that the front of your vehicle is facing an exit. That way you always have the option of driving off without having to manoeuvre too much.

  • Keep your van keys and mobile phone within easy reach next to your bed.

  • Let at least one person know where you are, for example by sharing your live location, especially if you’re travelling alone.

  • While you probably want to tell everyone where you are and what you’re doing right away, it’s worth holding back on social media. It’s best to delay posting for a few days so that strangers don’t know exactly where you are.

  • Curtains protect you from bright lights, early sunshine and, most importantly, prying eyes.

  • Keep the weather in mind: ensure your camper van is weatherproof against rain and thunderstorms; secure your awning and put everything that could be blown away in the camper.

Important tips for travelling with a camper van

Check in advance whether the pitch also has a toilet. If your camper van or motor home already has one, you’re on the safe side. If it doesn’t, you can find public toilets with apps such as Flush and ToiletFinder. Be sure keep the opening hours of public toilets in mind: some are closed overnight. Keep change on hand for toilets that have a fee.

Your RV should have a sewage system. Grey water from the toilet, but also cooking water, aren’t meant to be disposed in nature. In order to keep everything clean, make sure you use environmentally friendly soap

While it’s tempting to dispose of your waste in a public container or rubbish bin the next morning, properly disposing your waste is the better way. And while it might be a bit tedious, separating your waste when travelling is also effective.
