New year, new resolutions? Absolutely! Here are 12 New Year’s resolutions – one for every month. Be inspired – you might even find a new hobby. And you’ll certainly experience great times outdoors.

New Year’s resolutions should be fun, give you new ideas and, ideally, won’t already be abandoned by mid-January. That’s why we’ve put together 12 New Year’s resolutions, one for each month. That way, you can focus on something small every 30 days and constantly experience new adventures.

January: winter hike

January: winter hike

The start of the year is cold, but it’s still a great time to go outside. On a winter hike, ideally with snow crunching under your feet and a bright blue sky overhead, you can enjoy nature. Bring hot tea or punch to warm you up during your breaks.

However, avoid forest trails if it snowed heavily a few hours before. Branches can break off under the weight of fresh snow. Make sure to also check the avalanche situation.

February: ice bathing

February: ice bathing

In recent years, ice bathing has become quite trendy. Maybe you haven’t tried it yet. The resolutions are supposed to be fun, so whether you go for an ice bath or just stick your little toe in the water, do whatever you prefer. Find a spot by the water where you have a firm footing and ensure you don’t accidentally fall in.

March: spring hike on unfamiliar trails

March: spring hike on unfamiliar trails

In March the days are probably already getting warmer, so how about a first spring hike? There’s certainly still snow in the mountains, but further down shorter hikes are definitely possible. Have you always wanted to hike the Jura Höhenweg? Or are you looking for something more mountainous? Find tips on how to prepare and stay safe on the road here.

April: out and about in the rain

April: out and about in the rain

It’s not quite as cold as in deep winter, but it’s pretty sure to rain for a few days – that’s April. How about a walk in the rain? Dress warmly, layer with a rain jacket and pants, put your hood on and off you go! As long as you’re moving, you probably won’t get cold. If you need a break along the way, plan your walk so that you pass by a restaurant or café. At home, you can warm up with a delicious punch or another hot drink.

May: bike tour

May: bike tour

It’s no longer chilly, but also not too hot yet – ideal for a bike ride. No matter how long or short, enjoy the wind, discover new regions around you and just enjoy being on your way. Be sure to pack a bike light in case the tour takes longer than planned. And since good resolutions can be easily integrated into your day-to-day life, you can also plan to cycle to work or the train station every day during this month.

June: night hike

June: night hike

Climbing a hill or peak in the dark and seeing the first rays of sunshine is a wonderful experience. If you have time, take a longer hike or simply make a trip to your nearest hill. Maybe you’d like to have breakfast or a cup of coffee there. Remember: the hour before sunrise is the coldest of the day, so make sure to put on warm clothes so you can really enjoy the glow of dawn.

July: discover an unfamiliar body of water

July: discover an unfamiliar body of water

Find a lake, pond, stream or river you’ve never bathed in before. Maybe you’ll hike there, cycle there or just take the bus or train – the point is to swim, anyway. If you like, tack on other resolutions: cooking outdoors would be a great fit. Depending on the body of water, you don’t have to bring the cooking water with you – simply take it straight from the lake, boil or filter it.

August: sleeping outdoors

August: sleeping outdoors

Sleep outside for a night. If it’s your first night without solid walls and a roof over your head, book a spot at a campsite. If you’d rather be alone, find a place in nature – but be sure to observe the laws and guidelines that apply in your canton. For example, check with the local authority or owners in advance to ensure you can camp there for a night. There are also a few rules to follow in the mountains. August is known for shooting stars – make a wish!

September: cooking outdoors

September: cooking outdoors

We’re not making a fire yet, so we’ll save that for – watch out for spoilers – the New Year’s resolution in December. But cooking outside is also possible with a gas or petrol stove. Grab your cooker, choose a simple recipe – or, if you’re already superheroines, a particularly difficult one – and you’re ready to go! You can cook wherever you like, on a hike or even on your doorstep. Tip: if possible, take everything without the packaging. This way you’ll leave the rubbish at home.

October: autumn hike

October: autumn hike

There may already be snow in the mountains – but it usually doesn’t last for long. So it’s the perfect time to put on your hiking boots one last time. Autumn walks through colourful forests are particularly beautiful. Remember that it stays darker longer in the mornings and night falls earlier in the evening. You definitely need to pack a headlamp, along with a Thermos bottle with tea, because it’s not quite as hot as in summer.

November: marvel at the starry sky

November: marvel at the starry sky

In the winter months, you can see stars better because it gets dark earlier. Of course, it’s also cold, which is why you’ll need to dress warmly and find a spot away from the lights of civilisation. Give your eyes some time to adjust to the dark. You’ll see the wide starry sky best on a cloudless evening – and maybe you can start thinking about New Year’s resolutions for next year.

December: campfire with family and friends

December: campfire with family and friends

The year’s final resolution: gather your loved ones, find a fire pit and make a campfire. Of course, you can also incorporate the other resolutions: how about cooking a nice meal, since you’ve already cooked outside this year? This time you can go for a recipe that works well over a fire. And now’s the time to talk about your resolutions for next year.
