Repairing zips: here’s how to do it

There are several reasons why a zip no longer closes as it should. The most common reasons are:

• Wear and tear from frequent use

• Dirt and dust that accumulates in the teeth of the zip

• Bent or broken slider and/or zip teeth

• Wrongly sewn-in zip

Look closely at the spot where the slider gets stuck. Is it dirty? If so, clean it using a toothbrush. for example.

If you can’t see any dirt, a pencil might help. The graphite lead acts like a lubricant. Rub the tip of the pencil over the point that is stuck a few times. This is a good solution for metal zips and dark plastic zips, but it will discolour light-coloured zips. For those, it is better to go over the spot with a piece of soap or a light-coloured candle a few times.

If the zip gets stuck because teeth are bent, bend them back. This only works with metal zips. You’ll need to replace plastic zips. If it’s just the slider that’s bent and not the teeth, you just need to replace the slider.

You can use a paper clip to replace it. If you often put the jacket in your backpack, a piece of string might be a better solution, because when the jacket is rolled up in your backpack, the open end of the paper clip can damage the material of the jacket or trousers. That’s why it’s worth buying a new zip pull in a sewing shop.

The slider has been squashed and therefore no longer slides over the teeth. Bend it back carefully. The best way to do this is with a screwdriver; use it to open the slider on the sides. If that doesn’t help, you’ll have to replace it.

If the slider is bent apart, gently squeeze it together with pliers. However, don’t make it too tight, otherwise the sides of slider will break off. Bending weakens the metal, so it only works a few times before the slider breaks.

On the back of the slider, you will usually find the brand and a number. These will help you find the right replacement slider in a sewing shop.

Waterproof jackets need a waterproof zip with a waterproof finish. The seams are taped with a special band which is applied using a special machine. It’s almost impossible to repair this at home. If a waterproof zip needs to be completely replaced , it is best to have it repaired professionally.

If the zip opens by itself after being closed, or if the teeth of the zip do not fit flat together, but stand out like a pyramid, then the slider is probably broken. You can find replacement parts for zips in most sewing shops.

Close all zips before washing to prevent the teeth from getting caught and breaking. Remove dust and dirt from the teeth of the zip. The best way to do this is with a toothbrush.
