Hard shell jackets & waterproof jackets - your protection from wind and weather

Whether you're out and about in the mountains, hiking through the forest or cycling to work - a high-quality hard shell jacket or waterproof jacket is essential to protect you from rain, snow and wind. In our range at transa.ch and in our stores, you will find a large selection of outdoor jackets from top brands such as Arc'teryx, Patagonia, Mammut, Montane, Norrona, Ortovox, The North Face and many other renowned manufacturers.

What is the difference between a hard shell jacket and a waterproof jacket?

  • Hard shell jackets are particularly robust, abrasion-resistant and offer lasting waterproofness and high breathability. They usually consist of three layers (3L), with a membrane (e.g. GORE-TEX®) laminated between an inner and outer material. These jackets are ideal for demanding tours in the mountains or in extreme weather conditions.
  • Waterproof jackets are lighter and more flexible. They often consist of two (2L) or two and a half (2.5L) layers, making them compact to stow away. They are perfect for everyday use, shorter hikes or city trips when sudden rain showers occur.

Materials and technologies of jackets

Choosing the right membrane is crucial to the performance of your jackets. GORE-TEX® is one of the best-known technologies and stands for absolute waterproofness combined with high breathability. There are also other innovative materials such as Pertex Shield, Dermizax or eVent, which offer different advantages depending on the area of use.

  • 2L jackets: Outer material with a waterproof membrane, often with a loose inner lining. Comfortable, but heavier.
  • 2.5L jackets: Light, with a protective layer against abrasion on the inside. Good for hiking and everyday use.
  • 3L jackets: Extremely resistant and durable - the best choice for expeditions and demanding mountain tours.

How waterproof is a hardshell jacket?

The waterproofness is specified in water column (mm). A jacket is considered waterproof from 10,000 mm, models with 20,000 mm or more offer maximum protection in heavy rain.

How do I care for my hardshell jacket properly?

Regular cleaning is essential. Use a special membrane detergent to maintain breathability. After washing, you should put the jacket in the dryer at a low temperature or iron it (according to the manufacturer's instructions) to reactivate the impregnation.

When do I need to re-waterproof my waterproof jacket?

If water no longer beads up, it's time to re-waterproof with a PFC-free spray or detergent. This will ensure that your jacket stays dry.

How can I repair a hardshell jacket?

If your hardshell jacket gets a tear or a hole, you can patch it with special repair kits or adhesive patches for outdoor clothing. Make sure that the affected area is clean and dry before applying the patch. For more extensive damage or defective zips, it is worth having the jacket repaired by the manufacturer. You can bring your defective jackets to us at any time in the store or directly to our repair workshop in Altstetten.
