Windproof and waterproof trousers: safe protection from the tides

Nothing is more unpleasant than being out and about in damp or too thin outdoor clothing. The risk of catching a cold also increases if you are not optimally protected from the wind and rain. In addition to a waterproof jacket, we recommend wearing windproof and waterproof trousers that reliably keep the wind and wet out. Windproof and waterproof trousers are available in many different versions and for every season. While lightweight waterproof trousers are sufficient in summer, they need to be heat-insulating for cold days in autumn or spring.

Windproof and waterproof trousers: comfortable, light and robust

There are a number of important factors to ensure that windproof and waterproof trousers also impress on active outdoor tours.

You can recognise good windproof and waterproof trousers by the following features:

  • They are very light and hardly weigh down your luggage. The packing size is also small, so you can easily stow the trousers in your luggage and take them with you just in case.
  • A membrane prevents moisture from penetrating, but at the same time ensures that the material is breathable and moisture is quickly wicked away to the outside.
  • The materials are robust and tear-resistant. Windproof and waterproof trousers are also abrasion-resistant and can of course reliably withstand long downpours.
  • All zips are waterproof to prevent moisture from penetrating these areas too.
  • The material is also fast-drying and easy to care for. You can simply clean most models in the washing machine.
  • Additional reinforcements on the knees increase the load-bearing capacity and extend the service life of the trousers.
  • Some trousers feature side zips along the entire length of the leg. This has the advantage that you can leave your shoes on when putting on the trousers.
  • The waistband is as elasticated as possible so that your freedom of movement is not restricted.
  • Adjustable or elasticated hems, an adjustable waistband or leg ventilation further increase comfort. Integrated bags offer storage space for important outdoor accessories.
  • Thanks to a practical hanger, you can easily hang the windproof and waterproof trousers up to dry.
  • Removable braces further improve the fit of the trousers. Other models have practical belt loops.

How waterproof do the trousers need to be?

A material must be able to withstand a water column of 1300 millimetres to be considered waterproof. In practice, however, this is not enough to really keep water out permanently at the knees or buttocks. A water column of at least 3000 millimetres is therefore essential, straight in the areas subject to strong wear. Special coatings or membranes ensure that these values can be achieved.
