If you are planning a tour or expedition away from civilisation, a trekking backpack is the right choice. You can safely stow everything you need to survive outdoors in it: Clothing, food, cooking equipment, sleeping facilities and first aid equipment. Trekking backpacks are designed so that you can organise everything in them. However, the fit of your trekking backpack is at least as important as the storage options. It should suit your body size and fitness level.
Different criteria determine whether you can manage with a 50-litre backpack, whether 60 litres, 70 litres or even more are suitable.
Every trekking backpack is equipped with a special carrying system. It serves to optimally distribute the weight over the shoulders, back and hips and also to keep it as close to the body as possible, but not too close, because your back should always be well ventilated despite the backpack.
A good trekking backpack should also have a stiffened back section. Struts keep the packsack in shape, the straps must be padded and a wide hip belt is essential. The shoulder straps and hip belt, sometimes also called the hip fins, should be adjustable so that the weight is well distributed. On long lengths, this can quickly add up to 20kg of luggage. If all this weight is bedded on your shoulders alone, you will stop enjoying hiking after a short time. If the shoulder straps protrude upwards and all the weight rests on your pelvic bones, your joints will be overstretched. That's why all straps should be individually adjustable.
Two criteria determine the right size for you:
If you're not that well trained and you're not sure, then it's better not to go on a two-week tour in the wilderness. Start your trekking experience with a manageable 3-day tour and enjoy this first experience.
It is also important that the backpack has a back length that suits you. You can find the relevant information in the product descriptions of the respective backpack. To determine the right back length for you, you should measure the distance between your shoulder blades and pelvic bones.
In addition to the right size and length of backpack for you, a trekking backpack should usually be equipped with the following features/p>
When carrying a lot of luggage, it's straightforward and important that you can distribute all your belongings well in your trekking backpack. To do this, the backpack should be equipped with a sufficient number of compartments. On the one hand, this distributes the load on your back better, and on the other hand, you will find your seven things faster and lighter in a clearly organised backpack.
