Bike gloves: always have a firm grip on the handlebars

Well-equipped bike gloves are at least as important as the right clothing and the right saddle. With them, you always have a firm grip on your handlebars and can safely keep your direction of travel, whether on a road bike, on the road or on an off-road mountain bike. Adapted to the different requirements of each season, cyclists reach for short-fingered gloves in summer. In winter, on the other hand, it may be the well-lined, windproof and waterproof cycling gloves.

Bike gloves with functions and comfort

It is clear from your posture alone that a large part of your body weight rests not only on the saddle, but also on the handlebars. This can cause pressure points and blisters on your hands over long lengths. Appropriately equipped bike gloves made from functional material with comfortable padding on the palm of the hand ensure that you have a secure grip on your handlebars without blisters or pressure points.

To ensure this, good bike gloves are equipped with the following features:

  • Bike gloves have padding on the palm to prevent pressure points and blisters.
  • So that you don't slip off the handlebars, some cycling gloves have a rubberised palm.
  • Cycling gloves offer you individual weather protection. In winter, wind and water-repellent material keeps the cold and wet out, while in summer, for example, thin mesh materials provide sufficient ventilation.
  • Mountain bikers, on the other hand, rely on robust materials that are forgiving and provide optimum protection when you scrape along undergrowth or take a tumble.
  • Bike gloves need to fit perfectly. They should be relatively snug but not restrictive. The material should not wrinkle. This is why cycling gloves are usually made from elasticated material such as well-ventilated mesh in summer or GORE-TEX® with a weather protection membrane in winter.
  • Many gloves are now touchscreen compatible, i.e. the fingertips are equipped so that you can operate your smartphone even when wearing gloves.
  • Most glove models have an individually adjustable velcro fastener on the wrist to ensure a perfect fit.
  • Some models for summer are equipped with a towelling insert in the thumb area, which you can use to quickly wipe the sweat from your forehead.
  • Most models are equipped with loops to make it easier to take them off.

Bike gloves for all terrains

Whether you're a road cyclist or a mountain biker - bike gloves should fit. In summer, both like to wear short-fingered gloves with padded palms and a good grip. Some high-quality models even have small holes in the palm for good ventilation. The surface is usually made of airy mesh material, so that the hand is protected but also has good ventilation in hot weather.

Long-fingered gloves are recommended for the transition period, as they are usually ergonomically designed and therefore adapt perfectly to your hand and fingers. This way, they offer you sufficient dexterity and a very good grip.

When buying gloves, mountain bikers pay particular attention to the robustness of the material, as they are exposed to particular stresses and strains straight during downhill activities. Leather as well as synthetic leather and robust synthetic fibres such as polyester or polyamide are used to make mountain bike gloves. Due to the increased risk of falling, mountain bike gloves are also additionally padded and often have plastic caps on the fingers and knuckles to protect against injuries in the event of falls at high speed.
