The Pocket measuring device is a mass gauge. You can use it to determine whether the ceramic filter element of the Katadyn Pocket needs to be replaced. The ceramic depth filter removes bacteria, protozoa and other pathogens according to a simple principle: the mini-pores of the filter ceramic are smaller than the microorganisms mentioned. Depending on the degree of contamination of the water, these pores become clogged and the filter element must be cleaned mechanically. It is best to rinse it with a swimming pool until the bright, original color reappears. The filter element loses a little material with each cleaning. The mass gauge indicates whether the filter element is used up and needs to be replaced. It's very simple: if the gauge goes over the filter element, the filter needs to be replaced.
