Has your jacket’s zip broken? Or has your down jacket got a tear? Our repair team will almost always find a solution to keep your outdoor equipment waterproof and well functioning.

No matter how careful you are with your outdoor equipment, there’s always a chance it’ll get damaged if you use it frequently. That doesn’t mean you need to immediately head out and buy a replacement, though: our repair team will find a solution to fix almost every tear or hole.

GORE-TEX®

GORE-TEX® – stays waterproof after being repaired

The problem: Your zip is stuck because some of the teeth have broken off. You might even have used it so often that it’s bowing forward and is nearly impossible to open or close.

The solution: You need a new waterproof zip. The tricky thing about a GORE-TEX® jacket, though, is that the tape at the side of the zip is glued to the jacket from the inside to make it watertight.

The repair: We use heat to remove the tape, then we open up the zip seam. Next, we adjust the length of the new, waterproof zip and pin it to the right spot on the jacket before sewing it in place. Now, we need to select the correct tape for the GORE-TEX® fabric. We apply this from the inside using a special machine that welds each section at 165 degrees for twelve seconds. Once that’s done, the zip works like new and is dependably waterproof.

And, by the way, if you’ve just broken or lost the toggle itself, this can easily be replaced. Should you not be bothered about the zip being waterproof (if, say, your jacket is old and lets water through anyway), we can also use a non-waterproof zip without tapes – which is cheaper.

Repairs with a seal of approval: GORE-TEX®-certified

Transa is GORE-TEX®-certified – but what does that mean? Sarah, head of the repairs department, explains what certification is all about.

Sarah, why is this certification so important to Transa?
We’ve hugely expanded our repair service in recent years: our Zurich Europaallee and Markthalle Bern branches are both home to a tailoring team and a repair centre. This certification now allows us to officially repair GORE-TEX® products. Plus, we can use it to order the tapes we need. There are only four official GORE-TEX® repair points in Switzerland – and two of them are our Zurich Europaallee and Markthalle Bern stores.

What’s the process for getting certified?
First off, we needed to pass a GORE-TEX® test to prove that we had the skills, materials and machines to perform waterproof repairs. Our team of tailors passed this test with flying colours! Then, we signed a contract and received the tapes, training documents and hot press machines for Zurich and Bern. To wrap things up, we held a training session at the Europaallee store with the whole team, focused on the right materials and machines.

Why is Transa investing in its repair service?
We don’t part ways as soon as you’ve bought a product from us: we want to offer you great service after your purchase, too! We want to advise you if, say, the zip on your GORE-TEX® jacket is stuck, if your puffer jacket has a hole or your trousers have got torn. Our professional repair service is designed so you can keep using your product for as long as possible and boost its service life.

Down

Down – turn up the heat with new filling

The problem: You’ve torn the outer layer of your down jacket and you’ve lost most of the down filling.

The solution: We fill the chamber with new down and sew a patch on it.

The repair: We need to open up the seams around the damaged area so we can stitch the patch to the outer material. Every jacket is constructed differently, so we often just need to take things as they come. Now, we pin on the patch (and by the way, you can choose the colour of the patch yourself) and then stitch it down. We fill the repaired part with down before we sew it shut so your jacket will perform as it should after it’s been repaired. The down comes from jackets and sleeping bags that customers have given us to recycle. We break down these products, remove the down and clean it before reusing it.

Cotton

Cotton – good as new thanks to a creative repair

The problem: A hole in a shirt.

The solution: Normally, we’d repair damage like this by applying a narrow strip of fabric from behind then plugging the hole. However, this method leaves the site of the problem clearly visible. So, here, with the customer’s consent, we took a more elegant approach and moved the breast pocket.

The repair: Firstly, we needed to separate the breast pocket and the button. Then, we pinned the breast pocket over the hole to hide the damage. It’s important that the checked pattern on the pocket aligns as best possible with the shirt’s patterning. At the same time, we had to put the pocket somewhere that makes sense. Finally, we sewed it on. If you were wondering, there won’t be any trace that the pocket had been in its old position once the shirt has been washed!
